Here's the skinny on the Wilderness Survival class.
Wilderness Survival with special visit from Bob Alderink (NC Museum of Natural Sciences)
Saturday, September 12, 10a.m. to 4p.m. (Pavilion)
Adults: $55 / $50 for members; Children ages 12-17: $30 / $25 for members.
During this exciting workshop, attendees will receive an introduction to the four elements of wilderness survival: shelter, water, fire and food, and learn to:
•Build a debris hut shelter.
•Identify fall plant foods using several methods of plant identification, including Newcomb’s and recognizing plants by family.
•Advance through a variety of primitive ways to create fire (along with Bob Alderink, an expert in primitive fire making from the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.) Begin with the rubbing of two sticks, then learn bow drill, pump drill, fire piston, and flint and steel. Identify plants that live in our local area that can be used for creating fire. Prepare material and master the techniques to actually ignite!
Please bring a sharp pocketknife if you have one. Attendees should dress in comfortable, loose clothing and wear shoes, not boots. Also, please bring any plant identification guides you may have.
Note: we invite parents and children over 12 years old to attend this workshop together
